STEP 4. PRACTICE DAILY
In order to develop mental resilience to failure, we must take every opportunity to practice these skills.
When it comes to our sport, we know exactly when we are practicing. We put our training shoes on, grab our equipment, and we go to work. When it comes to mental training, there is no definitive practice time or place to hone our mental skills.
There’s no field to go to and no equipment to pick up. It’s just you.
Practicing our mental game first requires a shift in perspective in order to focus on certain skills. It requires us to realize that mental reps are happening all of the time – with every reaction, internal conversation, and choice we make.
In sport, we have been trained since we were young in what a “good” rep is, and how to make adjustments to our form or our timing. The difference with mental practice is that sometimes there isn’t a “right” or a “wrong” way to handle a situation and therefore, practice can be even harder.
Every time we talk to ourselves, every time we have a conversation after failure (whether out loud or in our own heads); every time we let the words “I can’t” escape our mouths – we are engaging in the mental game.
Your mental practice might look different than someone else’s and that’s OKAY. The most important thing is to mindfully dedicate yourself to actions, words, and thoughts that empower you and help you to recover over those things that hold you back.
Choose your mental strength daily and practice CHOOSING YOURSELF in the long-term rather than accepting what is comfortable in the short-term.
